A How-To: Melted Crayon “French” Manicure

After a month of Christmas nails, it was time to switch it up. My instinct to keep things interesting when I am out of ideas is to throw glitter on my nails. It’s a great solution, and I have some awesome glitters that keep things fresh. However, even that can get boring, especially when you’re used to whipping out all your nail art tools and multiple colors.
Then I saw The Dainty Squid’s most recent weekly nail and knew that a mix&match mani would be the perfect solution!
Kaylah’s inspiration came from here, which also came from here.
All three of these used scotch tape nail decals, something I have yet to try.
But their use of colors and different shapes inspired me to play around on my own.
Here was the result:

012

For these nails, I used 7 different polishes. Polka dots are super simple so I loved doing the border nails with varying color dots. I kept it simple on the ring finger with a line of alternating black and white dots.
Butttttt, my favorite nail is my pinky nail!
The pinky nail is super easy to do and it’s why I wanted to share a little tutorial with you guys!
The design itself reminds me of several crayons that melted near each other into a puddle and, since it’s near the tip of the nail, it’s a fun alternative to the classic (but sometimes stuffy) French manicure!
The good thing about these nails are that they are completely customizable. I like the multi-colored look (with a gray or beige to offset the brights), but I think this would be great with different shades of the same color or even a darker, monochromatic look with blacks and whites and silvers and grays.
I also chose to play with negative space, using just the base coat instead of putting down a solid color on the entire nail.
You can do that if you choose. If you feel more comfortable, you can use a sheer pink or off-white like a a basic manicure, or you can have some fun and use a crazy color of cream polish as the base!

I used a nail art wheel to show this since I didn’t want to take off my nail polish.

tut1

These are the colors I chose to use, sandwiched between a base coat and top coat. Both are essential items for any good at-home manicure. I’ll get into detail with that another time. I chose 4 bright and fun colors with a great creamy gray as a nice neutral anchor for the rest.

tut2

Grab whichever bottle you’d like to start with. Remove a good amount of polish off of the brush, but make sure you still have a nice dot left over. You don’t want to make a thick, hard to dry drop.

tut3

Making sure to keep your dots near the tip of the nail, lightly tap the brush onto the nail. It doesn’t have to be a perfect circle. Start small and you can add a bit more if you’d like to make a bigger dot or your nails are longer.

tut4

Yes, this dot is a bit thicker, but I recommend doing it on each nail in one color at a time (all ten gray, all ten blue, etc.). By the time you get back to that nail, it will have dried a teensy bit so that the colors won’t run together too much.

tut5 tut6

Continue making dots. The colors will spread a bit, especially as you get closer to the nail. Feel free to go back with past colors if they get covered with new ones, and to make sure the tips get covered with the colors closest to the edge.

tut7

The finished product!
It’s not going to look “perfect” because it isn’t. Each will have it’s own unique flow, mix and mesh of colors.
To smooth everything out, use a top coat!

I hope you enjoy the look!

An update on some things I love at the moment…

Eating:
I’ve had a large amount of Panera in the last couple of months, thanks to my hour lunches at work. It’s so close to Old Navy and the atmosphere is perfect to enjoy some soup, some coffee, and my current book. I love the Broccoli Cheddar soup and Iced Green Tea. Turkey sandwiches are also a usual pick.
Drinking:
Coffee, coffee and more coffee. I wish I could add something original here, but it’s freezing out and it wakes me up and keeps me warm. Dunkin’ has a new flavor, Brown Sugar Cinnamon, that is quite delightful.
Reading:
Though I’ve read plenty of articles along the way, I’ve started checking Buzzfeed on a regular basis. It’s just too fun.
I can (do) get lost on the site taking personality quizzes and reading fun lists. It’s the perfect waste of time.
Watching:
Aside from completely rewatching How I Met Your Mother (in the final stretch of season 6), the holiday season (with movies like It’s a Wonderful Life and The Shop Around the Corner) helped get me curious about watching old movies. For a long time, I’ve had an irrational fear of old movies. I have some theories as to why. Though I’ve exposed myself to some classics, I find myself ready to bring some real classics in. James Stewart in anything, the Katherine Hepburn movie collection my sister got, the romcoms on Netflix…I’m ready to open my mind!
Listening:
I finally got Lorde’s Pure Heroine and it’s the best thing my ears have heard in a while. I play that and The Love Club EP on shuffle and blast it as loud as possible. I haven’t been this excited about music since Lana!
Lusting:
Brad got me Bon Iver’s For Emma, Forever Ago on vinyl for Christmas. It sounds amazing. I’m looking forward to adding more contemporary music to his huge collection (though I love listening to Grateful Dead, Talking Heads, and Bossa Nova). Lana Del Rey’s Paradise is on it’s way to my house today and I have a long list of favorites, like
Florence + the Machine, Grizzly Bear, and Vampire Weekend, that I’d love to add.

A New Endeavor: Project Life

Something that is on my list for 2014 is scrapbooking. In my 26 years, I have never considered scrapbooking. And, if I’m being honest, I still don’t really know if I understand scrapbooking. It’s a fancier photo album? A glorified journal with photos? I don’t know. But I intend to find out.

Not that I don’t have my moments, but I wouldn’t classify myself as crafty.
I express myself in some “artistic” ways, I guess, by writing or taking pictures of my life or even painting my nails.
It wasn’t until the last year or so that I got into scouting through craft stores and thinking of what I could do on my own to save a few bucks and make something from the heart.

Because of this lack of innate craftiness, I’m really excited to explore scrapbooking in the form of Project Life.
If you follow A Beautiful Mess, then you’ve surely heard of this.
Basically, with a few ingredients from the Project Life collection and my own photos and decorative choices, I can create a journal/photo album hybrid that will put my photos and memories to use. I love blogging and taking pictures, but I think it will be really nice to have something physical to flip through when I want to take a walk down memory lane. A lot of photos in my phone or on my computer go ignored. A lot of memories fall by the wayside because I document it (or not) on the blog. And it’s a total pain to go back through the pages. Not that I don’t do it, and I love it when I see something I forgot about, but it’s not as easy as picking up a book and flipping through it.

photo(1)

Lucky for me (though it is sad), a craft store nearby is closing, which means mega sales on basically everything I need (I just had to get the Sunshine Edition core kit, created by Elsie and Emma!). In fact, if it weren’t for this, I probably wouldn’t have considered doing it. It’s not like I have the funds to throw around, especially since trying a hobby for the first time doesn’t mean it will actually last. This is the perfect way to dip my toes in and, if I love it, later investments will be worth it. I may not have a ton of money, but I have plenty of time.
What a better way to use it then to record it?

A Theme

As I get older, I find I’m more inclined to stay at home than to go out. Of course, after long stints of reclusiveness, it’s only natural that I need to go out and socialize, to be in a loud room with people buzzing about. It’s very rare that Brad and I go to bars because, well, it’s so much cheaper to buy some beer for the house, have people over, and actually be able to have a conversation instead of shouting over some crappy band.
In this instance, to keep things fresh, I love doing a theme party.
Having people over is fun enough, but add some sort of theme to the situation and it gets crazy better!

I understand why some people might find the idea of a theme party childish, because who didn’t have a party with TMNT or Barbie paper plates, cups, tablecloths, and party hats? However, I feel like age actually makes these parties so much more fun. The sky is the limit! Themed cocktails and costumes and a place of your own (usually) to decorate!

If you’ve been reading my blog for a couple of years, then you may remember my Prohibition-Era 25th birthday party!
What started as a small idea tossed around over drinks turned into a really successful evening, with amazing people surrounding me in beautiful 20s-esque garb drinking gin cocktails and brown bottled beer without the label.
party2_thumb
party7_thumb

Not that we always have to have a theme for my birthday, but in 2013, we decided to do a brunch. I, like so many others out there, love brunch, but it’s not something we have a lot of in NEPA. Sunday Brunch is one of those beloved occasions, and little to no places have it around here. So…why not make our own?
We had sweet and savory items, such as a yogurt station courtesy of my sister and bacon and egg cups via Brad. The drinks were mimosas (oh so good) with a variety of juices and Bloody Marys, something I don’t particularly enjoy but that a lot of my guy friends do! I also really like making them for Brad. Maybe one day they will grow on me…

424
421

To wrap up a list of things we’ve done, last night, Brad decided to hold a “Bottom-Shelf” shindig for some of our friends who were in just for the holidays, the ones we rarely get to see, especially when they have so many people to see!
Since the holidays are over, it’s safe to say that most of us are broke from celebrating and gifting. So Brad decided he would still have a party, but keep it really really cheap. We got the best of the cheapest beers (no more than $15 bucks a case), store-brand chips and snacks, $1 party pizzas, and yes…there was even Ramen! The recommended attire was sweats or the crappiest, most comfortable things you own! It was a small party, but so fun! Any excuse to drink in sweatpants around friends works for me!

029

Miller High Life is actually a go-to beer for me. It’s so cheap but it’s delightful!
PBR is a given and Lionshead is our hometown brew, the stuff I drank while learning to drink in college.

037

The gist of this post is…HAVE A THEME PARTY!
Being around your favorite people will always be fun but adding dress codes and drink menus always makes for a more memorable occasion! There are so many more themes I would love to try (more on that later, hopefully), but it’s all about what you want to do. Ugly Sweater parties are classic, and they don’t always have to be about Christmas (there are plenty of ugly sweaters without holiday motifs). Do your friends love a particular movie/TV show/book series? Find related cocktails and dress like characters would or do! Want to relive an era you never got to experience? Go back in time! Want to dress up for no good reason? Break out the champers and wine and fine cheese and make sure not to get it on your gown or tux! Even the simplest idea, like BEER, can turn into a creative theme.

Have fun, everyone!
Oh, and if you’ve ever had an awesome theme party, do tell!

Photo an Hour: 12/27/13

The first Photo an Hour post I’ve ever done (inspired by the likes of The Dainty Squid and Bleubird) was back in July.
It also happens to be the only photo an hour I’ve ever done. Since that day, I’ve wanted to try it again, but every time I’d think it would be a good idea, I’d lose track of the time or forget to bring my camera.
Last Friday, I woke up earlier than I had intended, full of inspiration and good vibes for the day. With that feeling, I decided to take a photo an hour. I am quite pleased with both the day and the pictures.
I did, however, use my iPhone to document the day.
All of the photos were edited using the VSCO app.

7 am:
001

I had Friday off, but Brad didn’t. He woke me up while getting ready, but I didn’t actually mind. Instead, I got up and got showered and ready for the day. I had plans anyway, so this meant I had more time to relax and get ready before hand. This is what my hair looks like post-blow dryer and pre-straightener.

8 am:
004

As it’s plain to see, I’ve finally started to get back into blogging. I’ve been staying up at night thinking of so many things I want to share and so many things I want to write about, for the blog and otherwise. This scene is ridiculous, but I’m still working with my crappy computer (in the back) because it has tons of old photos I haven’t gotten around to moving over to the “new” refurbished computer I got as a hand-me-down from Brad’s dad. Of course, I’m skimming my usual blog roll as I wait for things to get started on the old hunk of junk.

9 am:
007

My nails were naked for about 24 hours, which is completely unheard of for me. I decided to do a quick one-polish mani before meeting my friends for breakfast. It was a little sloppy, but Fake It ‘til You Make It by Deborah Lippmann is such a stunner that it barely even mattered. It was a Christmas present!

10 am:
009

11 am:
015

I had breakfast with these beautiful ladies at Cracker Barrel. We had a blast chatting and laughing and eating food and drinking coffee. It’s something so simple that needs to be done more often. Catie, all the way on the left, came in from Arizona for the holidays. Her hometown is in New Jersey, so we only got limited time with her, but it was so great to see her face and hug her. It had been too long. Can’t wait for next time!

12pm:
019

After our meal, Maria and I headed out to brave the crowds at the Lehigh Valley Mall, about an hour away from us. They have a lot more stores than we do in NEPA, and I haven’t been there in forever, so it was a nice change. I always love a good shopping trip, especially when I have a little extra pocket cash!

1 pm:
021

We finally arrived at our destination and one of the first places we stopped was Barnes & Noble.
Maria was searching for something she didn’t find until later, and I never wanted to leave this spot.
I love books. I want to live in a bookstore. I want to read all of the books.
And yes, I love YA.

3 pm:
025

Skipped an hour because I was busy shopping. Didn’t get too much…an awesome jacket on sale, The Art of Fielding for a steal, and a cute top for 1/2 the clearance price from The Gap. I also didn’t have to wait long in the lines.
Not too shabby.

4pm:
028

Back on the road. I always love taking photos in this tunnel.

5pm:
032

Horrible zoomed photo of the crazy sunset. I took this in the parking lot of the casino, where I was meeting Brad for food and happy hour drinks after the long day of shopping and such!

6pm:
034

My cute date and one of the best cocktails ever…an Effen Good. Anything with cucumber gets me hook, line, and sinker.

7pm:
037

I had work at 8 am on Saturday, so I had to take it easy on Friday night. After a drink and some great food at Bar Louie, Brad and I headed home to enjoy some GameCube action. As always, he kicked my butt.

This was a great day and I am glad I captured some photos of it.
I hope that, with this new year, I can incorporate Photo an Hour into my blog schedule more often.

Recent Reads and the Beginning of the 40 Book Challenge

books

The last two books I read at the end of 2013 were the final two books in the Jessica Darling series written by Megan McCafferty. My love for Jessica Darling, these books, and the author have been strong for over 10 years now…hard to believe it! The best part is, I obviously wasn’t alone since she decided to write 5 books about our beloved Not-So-Darling, the elusive Marcus Flutie, and why growing up sucks (or doesn’t, depending on the day).

When I reached junior high, I lost the voracious appetite I had for reading. Then I read Sloppy Firsts when I was in 9th grade. I’m pretty sure the book was recommended in an issue of Seventeen or something. For the first time, it wasn’t a book about teenagers in some kind of dreamy situation, like sharing a beach house and reuniting with your old summer fling or the eventual arrival of Gossip Girl and rich bitches. Don’t get me wrong, I loved books like that, too. But they weren’t relatable. Jessica Darling, however, was relatable. Her best friend, Hope Weaver, had moved away, she was struggling with strange menstrual issues and acne and annoying clique-y friends and a crush who would eventually come out of the closet. Then, of course, she fell for the manwhore dreg Marcus Flutie, who played more mind games than anyone could actually handle. Sighhhhhhhh.

For some reason, it took me this long to close up the series. I was reminded of how much I missed Jessica Darling. In fact, I really wish I could’ve re-read the series from start to finish, but I have so many new books to read that it seemed silly. Besides, I’d already read the first three books at least twice a piece. Also, fun fact, I once wrote an email to Megan McCafferty after the release of Second Helpings and she responded!

Anyway, I enjoyed both of these books, as expected. If you haven’t read any, I suggest you just go buy them all and love your life. Perfect Fifths was my least favorite, but it still wasn’t bad. It was the first and only book written in third person, as the others were written in Jessica’s perspective, in journal format. In a way, it was helpful to the story because we got to know a bit about Marcus in a way we never did. It was also interesting that Megan McCafferty had Jessica explain a little bit about writing and storytelling in third person in the book, a little wink at it, I’m sure.

I’m jealous of anyone who hasn’t read these. They are some of the most important books in my personal library and I’ve grown with them. They come highly recommended by me!

In related news, my reading challenge has officially begun! Because I finished Perfect Fifths yesterday, it is considered the first book of the year on Goodreads. You may remember my attempt last year? I ultimately finished at 37 books, 15 books short of my goal. I decided to make my goal this year an even 40. It’s not fun feeling like I have to finish a book by a certain time. In the beginning, it didn’t feel that way, but as the year got harder, it felt like a chore.
I hope to read more than 40, of course, and I have plenty of books on my list to read!
But 40 feels like a good number. 1 down, 39 more to go!

I like to write about what I read, as you know, but if you’re ever curious about books I’ve read in the past, what I’m interested in reading in the future, and how I’m doing on my current book, please feel free to check out my
Goodreads profile! I’m off to start book 2!

Festive Fingers

Now that Christmas is over (though I won’t really admit it and our tree is still up and smells incredible), I want to share my holiday nail art, much like my Halloween post. I really liked all of these designs, and the funny thing is that I pretty much used the same few colors for each different look.

White – Wet N’ Wild French White
Tan – Butter London Tea & Toast
Brown – OPI A-Taupe the Space Needle
Black – Sally Hansen’s X-Treme Wear Black Out
Red – OPI I’m Not Really a Waitress or Love & Beauty Red
Red Glitter – Essie Leading Lady
Green – OPI Jade is the New Black
Gold – Essie As Gold as it Gets

083
I used Elleandish’s tutorial for these adorable Christmas trees. Her YouTube channel is definitely one of my top favorites. She does excellent designs and teaches them very well. These were so fun. I’m Not Really a Waitress is a classic OPI color, but it’s a frosty red so it isn’t really my type. This season is the best time to wear it.

007

These snowfall nails can also be seen in the tutorial link above. I decided to go with a nice cold blue (Essie Butler Please) as the background, and I covered it with OPI’s Pirouette My Whistle which is basically like a snowfall in a polish bottle.

036

These string light nails are from CutePolish’s massive Christmas tutorial and they are super easy and super cute!

035

I probably never would’ve done Gingerbread nails until the CutePolish tutorial but they were just too adorable and tasty to pass up! This was an easy design. I like that it’s not the whole man, just his cute little buttons and frosting.

070
Rudolph nails! I used CutePolish’s tutorial but tweaked it a little to make it appear more like the Rudy we know and love from the old claymation special. Basically, I did simpler eyes and gave him teensy antlers instead of big ones, since he’s so young and hasn’t grown them as big!

106
These Santa nails were my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE DESIGN OF THE SEASON!
Another Elleandish design, it is so stinking adorable and jolly, much like the big man himself.
I was a little nervous about doing them, but it was much easier than I suspected and, again, Janelle did an excellent job of executing and explaining this design. I particularly love his little smile. :)

Nail art is one of my favorite things to do no matter the season or holiday, but it’s been especially fun to focus on the special days that get built up for a while, like Halloween and Christmas.
I’m so excited to continue honing my skills this year, and I look forward to getting better at painting my nails without needing major cleanup. I also am going to start doing a bit more involved care on my cuticles.
Hope you enjoyed the photos, and don’t forget to check out the wonderful YouTube channels of both Elleandish and CutePolish for designs for all occasions!
