Project on a Whim: Bunting Flags

Like so many people, I adore bunting flags. They are the quickest way to lighten up and decorate a space.
Sure, you can buy them, but what if you want (or perhaps need, for a party) a particular color scheme or phrase?
I searched for a simple way to make bunting (I don’t know how to sew) and found this tutorial.
After that, I immediately headed to the craft store and got felt…that was the only thing I didn’t have for this project.
At .29 cents a piece, this is not an expensive craft at all. I bought 10 sheets, but I ended up using only 5.

 

I followed Lindsay’s tutorial to the tee. I made a triangle template to use for my felt, made holes with a puncher, and tied everything together with some thin yarn (I figure it’ll work as well as string and I already had it). The only difference is that I decided to add letters to the flags. I thought of a couple of things to put on it but finally settled on “Be Creative” because it’s something I want to do in any capacity every day.

I’m really pleased with it, and especially happy that I was able to do everything, the flags and the letters, with just 5 pieces of felt. I still have scraps and 5 extra sheets, meaning I can definitely make another one, maybe for Brad’s?

Next time, I’d like to make a spacer flag but hindsight is 20/20 and I still think it’s pretty great.
I predict a lot more bunting flags in my future…

Home for the Holidays

The house is finally decorated for Christmas…which is good because it’s less than 2 weeks away!
Are you ready? I’m scared of how fast it’s coming…it’s the most wonderful time of the year!

I can’t take credit for any of this. Maria is the best decorator ever.
And, small confession, I kind of…really dislike…decorating the Christmas tree. I love the finished product.
Maybe when I have a home and little family of my own, I’ll like doing it.
But for now, I’ll just enjoy the magic around the house, courtesy of my awesome sister.

7 Days…

It’s Christmas in a week, you guys!

 
So, I’ve been listening to Christmas music non-stop (it’s on all day at work), done quite a bit of present shopping, and the tree and lights are all set up at the house. And yet I still don’t fully feel in the holiday spirit. Am I crazy?

Perhaps this is what it’s like when you grow up. Obviously, there’s no Santa to believe in anymore. And you don’t get as many presents. But I always have more fun giving anyways. Seriously, it’s the best to see someone unwrap this present you felt suited that person. And hopefully they enjoy it!

Maybe this upcoming week will cement the mood for me.
And it will be nice to have a shorter work week (not by much, but I suppose we take what we can get).

Halloween

I haven’t celebrated Halloween in years. Like…lots of years. I dressed up a couple times in college but I never took it seriously or cared. I’d throw something together last minute that was completely half-assed. But whatever. I kinda wanted to do something this year. It took a long time to settle on a costume (and now I’m dying to try/be so many things next year) and figure out what exactly we’d be doing…but it was a good weekend.

 
For starters, I read about a Zombie Walk in downtown Wilkes-Barre and got really curious. It wasn’t the biggest crowd, but I really enjoyed seeing people get in the holiday spirit (and I personally would love to do this sometime). Super cool, and way better in person.

 
I went out for a bit on Saturday, but the magic happened Sunday. As I mentioned before, my sister loves to decorate. And they went all out, like…really ALL OUT. But it was so much fun to hand out candy, drink caramel apple martinis, eat Chinese takeout, and enjoy the holiday.

I am so bummed to go back to the real world (and a 6 day work week, nonetheless). Weekend, you are so fantastic.

P.S. If you don’t know my costume, I settled on a female version of one of my favorite characters, V (from V for Vendetta).

Holiday Spirit

My sister gets a little excited about the holidays. Like…every holiday. It’s just in her nature. She loves decorating as it is, but throw a special day in there and she is obsessed. I have to admit, I like that about her. Because then everyone gets into the spirit.

I have no idea what I’m doing for Halloween yet. I finally settled on a costume and then they didn’t have it. Just my luck. I got something else, but as always, my main priority is comfort, and I am not sure if I feel comfortable with it. We’ll see…

Regardless, happy holidays everyone! I have yet to carve the pumpkin I purchased last week…maybe tomorrow.
